How to - winter

How to - Winterproof your motorcycle

Letting your bike hibernate through the colder months? Then check out these tips on how to winter-proof your ride.

Fill or empty the tank

If you have a metal fuel tank, it should be filled to the top when parked on level ground to avoid any rust build up. Plastic tanks should be emptied in case they react with the fuel.

Clean the motorcycle

Clean and fully dry your motorcycle. Give any metal parts a wipe with a rag and some WD40, or similar, to avoid the risk of corrosion (but steer clear of the brakes!). Examine the motorcycle and check everything works as it should.

Change engine oil

If you can, drain and change the engine oil, along with the oil filter. Make sure you dispose of the used oil in an environmentally friendly way. If you don’t know how to change the oil, make sure you get yourself booked in for a service at the beginning of the next season.

Check coolant

Check the coolant level and top up if necessary. If you don’t know how to do this, please refer to your service manual or seek advice from a professional mechanic.

Remove battery

Remove the battery from your bike and store responsibly indoors. Make sure you charge the battery occasionally, or alternatively, hook it up to a trickle charger.

Tyre pressure

Check tyre pressures and inflate if necessary.

Storing your motorcycle

Store your bike in a dry and well-ventilated space. Cover if necessary, but don’t use a plastic sheet as condensation can occur and the plastic could melt onto any hot parts. If you have to store your motorcycle outdoors, make sure you use a waterproof cover that allows some ventilation.
